Clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters: when to use them?
As we explained in a previous article, clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters calculate the flow rate of liquids flowing inside pipes based on the physical principle of transit time difference: they calculate the difference in time taken by an ultrasonic wave to travel in both directions, current and countercurrent, a section of pipe full of fluid: the measurement of the transit time is in fact proportional to the speed of the flow and therefore to its flow rate.
These instruments are suitable for measuring the flow rate of many types of fluids regardless of conductivity, pressure or chemical characteristics in pipes of different materials and are particularly suitable where immediate commissioning and short-term flow measurement operations are required.
Installation is simple as they are not intrusive technologies but are mounted externally to the pipeline – there is no need to cut or interrupt the process, reducing downtime and associated costs.
They also eliminate problems related to drift, pressure drop, flow obstruction, can handle bi-directional flows and a wide range of operating temperatures.
They are very versatile and find application in multiple sectors including: water cycle, oil & gas, hydroelectric, food, pharmaceutical.
The IFX-F161 portable clamp-on flow meter
The new IFX-F161 is suitable for fixed installations on pipes of various materials and for pipes from DN15 to DN1200, it is equipped with a backlit LCD display and a 5-key keyboard for programming.
Through its simple and intuitive menu it is possible to start the measurement in a few simple steps. It offers a bidirectional measurement with totalization function.
It has relay and/or analogue outputs as well as Modbus RTU or HART.
Thanks to the input for 4-wire PT1000 temperature sensors, it is also able to measure thermal energy in compliance with EN1434 with which it is equipped. All details are available in the technical data sheet.
The portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter IFX-P261 model
The IFX-P261 portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter is easy to use thanks to the simple and intuitive menu that allows to start the measurement in just a few steps.
It is equipped with a display for viewing the instantaneous flow rate and the totalized volume and a large data logger to store up to 26 million data, with the possibility of downloading the data in .csv format thanks to a USB-C port.
