World Earth Day: 22 April

Every year World Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, an international event established for the first time in 1970 to give voice to an emerging environmental awareness and concerns about the health of our planet. The theme of this 53rd edition of the event is the restoration of ecosystems. ISOIL Industria, which has always made environmental sustainability a pillar of its business, invites everyone, today as every day, to take action for a sustainable future: from planting trees, to waste collection, reducing plastic consumption, responsible purchases, energy efficiency, reduction of water consumption and water pollution.

The health of the Earth in numbers

The state of health of our planet is not good. Climate change is one of the main threats: according to the “State of the global climate in 2022” report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the last 8 years have been the hottest on record, fueled by ever-increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases and from the heat accumulated in the sea.
The increase in global temperatures is causing the melting of glaciers (last year the record melting of Alpine glaciers was achieved in 2003, with losses in thickness from 3 to 4 meters), the increase sea level rise, extreme weather events, changes in climate and animal habitat, and biodiversity losses.
There are 1 million species currently at risk of extinction on the planet
, and 40% of insect species are threatened, including many pollinators .
In certain areas of the Amazon forest, due to deforestation, the intensification of the dry season and fires, emissions exceed the absorption of 1 billion tons of CO2 per year.
Other serious problems are air and water pollution and the water crisis: only 0.18 percent of the entire earth’s surface and 0.001 percent of the world’s population are exposed to levels of air pollution considered safe according to WHO standards and it is predicted that by 2030, 47% of the world’s population will live in areas of high water stress and that by 2050, water demand will increase by 55%.
Food production is also seriously threatened by the loss of fertile soil, drought and plant and animal diseases. Unfortunately, the situation is bound to get worse unless urgent action is taken: each of us must feel involved in the fight against climate change and must understand the importance of adopting virtuous behaviors in our daily lives.

Earth Day, the largest event to raise awareness for the protection of the planet

To raise awareness of the need for battles to defend the Planet, World Earth Day is celebrated on 22 April.
The anniversary involves more than a billion people from 190 countries in demonstrations and events and is based on the assumption that:
“everyone, regardless of race, gender, how much they earn or where they live, has the right to a healthy and sustainable environment”.

Here are some concrete actions to invest in our planet:
  • Plant trees: support the dal earthday.org campaign, which in 2010 with The Canopy Project contributed to the reforestation of some of the areas most at risk of climate change and environmental degradation.
  • Reduce plastic consumption: make a plan to reduce your plastic consumption using the plastic calculator.
  • Participate in Advocacy: send a letter to your local elected officials, speak up at your next town hall meeting, or sign an Earth Day petition.
  • Vote Earth: learn your voting rights and get reminders for important voting deadlines.
  • Sustainable Fashion: learn about the detrimental impacts of “fast fashion”, the importance of sustainable fashion, and commit to responsible consumption.
